Karva Chauth 2026: From Sargi to Moonrise, and What to Wear

5 min read North India

Karva Chauth is one of North India’s best-loved festivals. On this day, married women fast from sunrise until the moon rises and pray for their husband’s long life and happiness. Today many husbands fast too, and the day has become a celebration of togetherness. In 2026, Karva Chauth falls on Thursday, 29 October, nine days after Dussehra and ten days before Diwali.

Here is how the day unfolds, from the pre-dawn sargi to the first glimpse of the moon, plus easy ideas for what to wear so you look festive and stay comfortable through a long fast.

When Is Karva Chauth?

Karva Chauth is kept on the chaturthi (fourth day) of the waning moon in the month of Kartik, as North Indian calendars count it. That usually lands in October or early November. The fast ends only when the moon is visible, so the exact time of breaking the fast changes from city to city. Check your local moonrise time on the day, and keep an eye on the sky: a cloudy evening can mean a longer wait.

The name comes from two words: karva, a small clay or metal pot with a spout, and chauth, the fourth day. You can read more about its history on Wikipedia’s Karva Chauth page.

The Day, From Sargi to Moonrise

Before sunrise: sargi

The day begins in the dark, before dawn, with sargi. Traditionally the mother-in-law prepares a thali with fruit, dry fruits, mathri, pheniyan (sweet vermicelli) and sweets, along with small gifts like bangles or sindoor. It is the last meal until moonrise, so it is meant to be filling and full of love. Many women then keep a nirjala fast, with no food or even water until the moon appears.

Getting ready

Mehendi is usually applied the night before, and a deep colour is said to be a good sign. On the day itself, women dress in new or bridal outfits, with glass bangles, sindoor, bindi and their favourite jewellery. Many choose to wear their wedding colours again, which is why reds, maroons and pinks fill every gathering.

Evening: the katha and the feris

In the late afternoon, women gather in a circle, often at a neighbour’s home or a temple, each holding a decorated thali with a diya, a karva filled with water, sweets and roli. An elder tells the Karva Chauth katha, most often the story of Queen Veeravati, whose brothers tricked her into breaking her fast early and who won back her husband’s life through devotion. As the story is told, the women pass their thalis around the circle in seven rounds, called feris, singing the traditional Karva Chauth songs.

Moonrise

Then comes the wait everyone talks about. When the moon finally appears, each woman looks at it through a channi (sieve), offers water to the moon from her karva, and then looks at her husband through the same sieve. He offers her the first sip of water and the first bite of something sweet, and the fast is over. A happy family dinner follows, and in many homes it is the best meal of the year.

Where Is Karva Chauth Celebrated?

The festival is most widely kept in Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu. Families from these states keep it alive wherever they live, from Mumbai and Bengaluru to Dubai, London and Toronto. Here in Rajasthan, Karva Chauth evenings in Ajmer and Jaipur are full of mehendi stalls, crowded bangle shops and rooftops packed with families watching for the moon.

What to Wear on Karva Chauth

A Karva Chauth outfit has two jobs: it should look special in moonrise photos, and it should be comfortable enough to wear from morning to night on an empty stomach. Keep these simple rules in mind:

  • Colour: red is the classic choice, because it stands for love and marriage. Maroon, wine, rani pink, orange and gold are just as auspicious, and soft shades like dusty rose and olive green look elegant if you prefer something calmer.
  • Comfort: pick a breathable fabric and a fit that lets you sit cross-legged through the katha. Save the heavy lehenga for a wedding and let embroidery, gota or zari add the richness instead.
  • Details: a sheer dupatta looks beautiful when you hold the channi, and three-quarter or sleeveless styles show off your mehendi and bangles.
  • Jewellery: if your neckline is heavily embroidered, keep the necklace light and let statement earrings do the work.

Our Karva Chauth Picks

We chose four festive suits from the Aavari collection that tick every box above:

  • Wine Floral Printed Kurta & Pant Set (around ₹4,800): a deep wine kurta with gold-tone embellishment at the neckline, cuffs and hem, paired with straight ankle-length pants. Wine is the perfect alternative to classic red, and the knee-length kurta with side slits is easy to sit in through the katha.
  • Rani Pink Embroidered Short Kurta & Palazzo Set (around ₹2,950): a sleeveless short kurta covered in gold-tone floral embroidery, finished with pink bead drops at the hem, and flowing flared palazzos. Sleeveless means your mehendi and bangles get all the attention.
  • Dusty Rose Embroidered Anarkali Set with Tassel Dupatta (around ₹4,950): an ankle-length Anarkali with floral vine embroidery, slim pants and a sheer dupatta with gold edging and tassel corners. This is our pick for the moonrise moment, because the dupatta drapes beautifully as you lift the channi.
  • Olive Green Embroidered Sharara-Style Palazzo Suit (around ₹3,700): a short flared kurti with an embellished bodice and scalloped hem, extra-wide palazzos that move like a sharara, and a sheer embroidered dupatta. A fresh, modern choice if you have worn red every year.

Every order comes with cash on delivery and 30-day returns with free size exchanges (see our return policy), and most orders arrive within 5 to 7 business days. Since Karva Chauth is close, we suggest ordering early. If you are in Ajmer, you can also try these suits at the Aavari store in Vaishali Nagar, open every day from 10 AM to 10 PM. Simple Tips for an Easy Fast

  • Eat a balanced sargi with dry fruits, fruit and something with protein, and drink plenty of water before sunrise if you are keeping a nirjala fast.
  • Rest in the afternoon, so you have energy for the katha and the long evening.
  • Lay out your outfit, jewellery and thali the night before, after your mehendi dries.
  • If you are pregnant, unwell or on medication, talk to your doctor first. Many families happily allow a lighter fast with water or fruit.

Can unmarried women keep the Karva Chauth fast?
